In conjunction with the International Day to End Violence Against Womens and Girls on 25 November, the United Nations issued a report on gender based violence. The report presented some harrowing facts and figures that revealed:
- one in four women in the UK are affected by sexual or physical violence
- a woman is assaulted an average of 35 times before she reports it
- 85% of rapes are never reported at all
From 25 November until 10 December, UN Women UK are holding a 16-day campaign to draw a line to end violence against women and girls. As part of the campaign, buildings across London are being lit up with orange lights to symbolise a brighter a future without violence. Last week, campaigners in Covent Garden encircled the area with orange tape that had messages to raise awareness.
